Leasowe Common and Lighthouse

William Hutchinson, attending one evening at a gentleman’s evening, was party to a bet that ‘no-one could read by the light of a farthing candle at 30 feet’ ……the winner lined a pudding bowl with mirrors and with some putty attached the farthing candle. Hence was born the Parabolic Reflector, the first two of which were installed at Leasowe Lighthouse and Bidston Hill. 1770!!!-ish
